Restoring VM's "operating system not found"

I need a solution

Hi All,

I've just implemented a backup solution on NBU 7.1.0.4. I am backing up over the SAN.

I tried a test restore and it completed successfully according to NetBackup, however when we powered on the VM we got "operating system not found"

I pulled up the vmware kb which says i should restore over the network using nbd rather than san, which is something i want to avoid.

However the Symantec technote give the option of "To restore using the san transfer type, identify the offline or readonly LUN for this datastore in the Windows Disk Manager on the NetBackup VMware Backup Host and bring it online (refer to operating system documentation.)"

The LUNs presented to the Windows Media Server are set to "disable automount" so Windows does not lable them. They are also offline.

Has anyone come across this before? If i was to online the specifc restore LUN, thats fine, but in the event of needing a larger restore it would be best to have all the LUNS online all the time. Would this cause any adverse effects?

Thanks

Jay
